Children’s Hospital Colorado is an American College of Surgeons – verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and a State of Colorado-designated Regional Pediatric Trauma Center. We have the only center at this level in the seven state region of the Rocky Mountain west, and we are the only program in the state of Colorado dedicated to providing both pediatric burn treatment and burn prevention education for kids. As a tertiary-referral trauma center, Children’s Hospital Colorado cares for the most severely injured children in our region. The Burn Center Program was established more than 30 years ago to treat all aspects of a burn or skin injury in babies, kids and teens, including rehabilitation and scar reconstruction. In 2011, the Burn Team at Children’s Colorado evaluated more than 10,000 injured children in the hospital’s Emergency Department and cared for more than 1,000 inpatients. Of these children, about 50 had major burn injuries, while more than 400 had small area burns and were seen in our outpatient clinic. We treated children from 59 of the 64 Colorado counties and from seven other states. With non-accidental trauma and motor vehicle injuries on the rise as the leading cause of traumatic death, Children’s Colorado continues to educate staff and the community on burn preventions and educations through programs and symposiums offered throughout the year.
The mission of the Children’s Colorado Burn Camps Program is to improve the lives of burn-injured children. Through the use of an enriched curriculum and a path of adventure in a safe environment, the program strives to develop imagination, character, and confidence in our campers, giving them the ability and courage to thrive during their recovery and beyond. The Burn Camps Program is currently in it’s 28th year. The success of the program is based on a strong, dedicated staff specializing in burn care, professionals from referring burn units, firefighters, and adult burn survivors who have been through the camp program. Camp activities present physical and emotional challenges to advance the healing process, and we strive to recognize the rehabilitation needs of each child and family. The Burn Camps Program meets these needs by providing challenging activities, opportunities to form lasting friendships, adult mentorship, and goal setting opportunities.
