Pediatric trauma care at Children’s Hospital Colorado is provided by a multi-disciplinary group composed of pediatric surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons, medical specialists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, as well as, rehabilitation specialists. Children’s Hospital Colorado is the only pediatric burn center in a seven state region. Our burn team includes burn surgeons, sub-specialty surgeons (plastics, hand and oral/dental), specially trained burn nurses, physical and occupational therapists who specialize in the care of burn-injured children, child life specialists, a child psychologist and a social worker. Our focus, as a team, is to provide comprehensive burn care for children with all types of burn injuries, from very small superficial burns of the hands or face that heal on their own, to very large, deep burns that require complex surgical and therapeutic management. Burn care at Children’s Hospital Colorado extends beyond the physical healing to include psychosocial support through our school re-entry, burn camps and juvenile fire setter programs, as well as community engagement through our outreach and burn prevention efforts.
The mission of the Children’s Colorado Burn Camps Program is to improve the lives of burn-injured children. Through the use of an enriched curriculum and a path of adventure in a safe environment, the program strives to develop imagination, character, and confidence in our campers, giving them the ability and courage to thrive during their recovery and beyond. The Burn Camps Program is currently in its 33rd year. The success of the program is based on a strong, dedicated staff specializing in burn care, professionals from referring burn units, firefighters, and adult burn survivors who have been through the camp program. Camp activities present physical and emotional challenges to advance the healing process, and we strive to recognize the rehabilitation needs of each child and family. The Burn Camps Program meets these needs by providing challenging activities, opportunities to form lasting friendships, adult mentorship, and goal setting opportunities.
